Step 1: Read Matthew chapter 2

Step 2: A little teaching...

Ok... we're backing up just a bit

to Matthew 1:18 and we're thinking about all of chapter 2.

There was a man named Joseph.

God talked to him through Dreams.

Rich and powerful strangers hand their treasure over to him.

An evil king tried to kill all the baby boys.

Joseph leads his family into Egypt.

The family comes home from Egypt.

Now... get a Bible and read Genesis 37, 39-50.

Keep reading... Exodus 1-2,

Did you see it?

There was a man named Joseph.

God talked to him through Dreams.

Rich and powerful strangers hand their treasure over to him. (Potiphor and Pharaoh)

Joseph leads his family into Egypt.

An evil king tried to kill all the baby boys.

The family comes home from Egypt.

The story of Jesus begins like the story of the people of Israel.

Every time you hear Matthew say, "This was to fulfill..." he is reminding us that Jesus is the clear continuation/fulfillment of the story of God's people.

Step 3: Discuss, Doodle, Draw or Journal...

If Joseph in Matthew is like Joseph in Genesis,

Who is Jesus like? Hint: The baby who survived in Exodus.

As we read Matthew's Gospel, we'll ask 'are there more similiarities between these two survivors?' Can you think of any?

What calamity/calamities have you or your family survived?

Did they get you to where you are now? How? Are you thankful for the hard stuff?

Pastor says, "When I got divorced, I thought my whole world was coming undone. Now... every time I see Debbie (my spouse) I am thankful for that earlier calamity."

Bonus points: post your reflections on our facebook page.

Step 4: Pray

Dear God, You are with us in good times and hard times. Help us to remember you in both. Help us point to you at all times for the sake of those who suffer or celebrate. Amen.
