The People of Saint James and The Gospel of Matthew
March 19, 2020
Step 1: Read Matthew chapter 4
Step 2: A little teaching...
This feels like a BIG (i.e. important) chapter.
1. Jesus is test by the Devil.
2. Jesus begins his ministry.
3. Jesus calls the First Disciples
4. Jesus starts ministering to the Crowds
That's a lot!
Pastor Bill recently preached a sermon on the testing.
You can listen to it here.
Notice that Jesus ministry begins after John's arrest and that his first response is to withdraw to Galilee.
Notice that Jesus first sermon (4:17) is the same as John's sermon (3:2)
Notice that Jesus called two pair of brothers (Matthew loves pairs).
The brothers are called and they follow, no questions asked. Was it a miracle. Did they have a choice?
Notice verse 24, his fame spread through all of Syria." Some people think this is a hint about where Matthew lived and the congregation he was writing to.
Step 3: Discuss, Doodle, Draw or Journal...
Why do you think Jesus was tempted?
Do you agree with Pastor's theory?
Does it matter that Jesus and John gave the same sermon?
Did they have the same ministry?
What do you think about those disciples?
Was their response a miracle or a choice?
Are you a disciple because you decided to be one?
Or did it just happen?
What do you think of all the miracles vss 23-27?
Do miracles still happen? Have you seen one or experienced one?
What miracles do you pray for?
Step 4: Pray
Dear God, One day out of the clear blue sky you appeared in the person of Jesus Christ. Like us you faced temptation. Like us you chose some friends. Like us you spoke a word. Like us you waded into a world of people, all of whom had their own unique troubles. Help us to see your presence now. Help the world to see your presence through us. In Jesus name we pay. Amen.
